2024-11-01

The 25th Tripartite Environment Ministers Meeting among China, Japan, and the Korea (TEMM25) took place in Jeju, Korea from September 28 to 29, 2024. The meeting was attended by delegations led respectively by Chinese Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu, Japanese Minister of the Environment Shintaro Ito, and South Korean Minister of Environment Kim Wan-sup. The three ministers introduced their countries’ environmental policies and latest developments and exchanged views on regional and global environmental issues. Li Haisheng, President of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), was part of the Chinese delegation.

At this meeting, Zheng Zhirong from the CRAES was awarded for her outstanding contributions to trilateral environmental cooperation. Chinese Minister Huang Runqiu presented the award certificate to her.

Ms. Zheng Zhirong primarily engages in international cooperation on sandstorms and ecological monitoring of desertification. She is the academic leader, project leader, and the member of Working Group II on Dust and Sand Storms (DSS WG II) of the Tripartite Joint Research on Sandstorms among China, Japan, and Korea. For over a decade, she and her team have actively explored and strengthened communication and cooperation with experts from Japan, Korea, and Mongolia, and striven to establish a regional environmental cooperation platform with influence and appeal, while promoting technical cooperation and exchanges on regional sandstorm prevention under the “China-Japan-Korea + Mongolia” framework, telling a good story of China to the world, and thus acting as a bridge to building trust.

Launched in 1999, the TEMM aims to implement the consensus reached by the three national leaders, discuss and address shared regional environmental issues, and promote sustainable development in the region. The meeting is hosted in rotation by the three countries. The TEMM environment awards were established at the 14th TEMM in 2012 to recognize individuals and organizations who have made outstanding contributions to trilateral environmental cooperation.
