On September 9, 2025, a delegation of management personnel from the provincial government of Jakarta, Indonesia, and representatives from Breathe Cities visited the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES) to engage in an exchange focused on air quality management and air pollution control technology cooperation.

Xue Jie, the head of the International Cooperation Center of CRAES, extended a warm welcome to the Breathe Cities and Jakarta delegation. She provided a general introduction to the development journey, scientific and technological innovation achievements, and overall international cooperation status of CRAES. Dr. Xue emphasized that as a national ecological and environmental scientific research institution, CRAES has achieved remarkable results in air pollution control. Particularly noteworthy is the significant progress made in the research on the causes and control of severe air pollution in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and its surrounding areas, which has provided valuable experience for global air pollution control. She expressed CRAES' willingness to offer technical support and share experiences with Jakarta's air pollution control efforts. She also looked forward to conducting in-depth technical exchanges and cooperation with Breathe Cities and the Jakarta delegation under the guidance and support of the governments of China and Indonesia, to jointly contribute scientific wisdom and strength to regional air quality management.

Vivian Chit Pun, regional technical head of Breathe Cities, C40 Cities, spoke next. She highly praised China's achievements in air pollution control and stated that Breathe Cities has always been committed to promoting coordinated emission reduction actions and sustainable development among cities. She expressed the organization's desire to continue communication with CRAES to jointly tackle air pollution challenges. Helmy Zulhidayat, the head of Environmental Planning at the Jakarta Provincial Environment Agency, also expressed his gratitude for the warm reception from CRAES. He introduced the climate and clean air actions and highlights of Jakarta and expressed his hope for more pragmatic cooperation between the two sides in air quality management.

Subsequently, experts from both sides delivered special reports on their respective topics and engaged in in-depth exchanges. Researchers from CRAES provided the delegation with detailed introductions of China's experiences and research progress in air pollution control and emergency management of severe pollution. Both sides had in-depth discussions on how to strengthen regional cooperation, share experiences, and enhance air quality management capabilities.

Prior to the meeting, the delegation visited the Comprehensive Experimental Building of CRAES and the Comprehensive Scientific Observation and Research Station for Atmospheric Environment of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and its Surrounding Regions. Scientists and researchers in the field of the air pollution control participated in the discussion and exchange.

This exchange fostered Sino-Southeast Asian cooperation on air quality management and offered novel approaches to tackling urban air pollution globally. CRAES will continue to strengthen cooperation with domestic and international institutions, promote environmental scientific research and technological innovation, and contribute more wisdom and strength to the global improvement of environmental quality.
