Delegation from TREASURES Visits CRAES for Scientific and Technological Cooperation Exchange on Solid Waste

Beijing, 1 July 2026A delegation led by Liu Xianfang, Co-Director of Singapore’s Research Center for Residue and Toxic Industrial Waste Management (TREASURES), and Chu Jian, Dean of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Nanyang Technological University and Fellow of the Academy of Engineering Singapore, visited the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES). Xu Yisheng, Chief Engineer of CRAES, presided over the meeting.

Xu Yisheng extended a warm welcome to the delegation. He stated that this in-depth discussion marks a new phase of deeper and more specialized exchanges between the two sides. He hoped that both parties would accelerate the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation and continuously deepen scientific research exchanges through joint research projects. Chu Jian thanked CRAES for its warm reception and remarked that the meeting was pragmatic and efficient. He highlighted the mutual benefits of translating research into real-world applications, while also stressing the importance of nurturing the next generation of environmental scientistsproposing expanded exchanges for postgraduate students and early-career researchers between the two institutions.

During the meeting, representatives of TREASURES gave a brief overview of Singapore’s Zero Waste Masterplan and the establishment background of the research center, with a focused elaboration on its four core research pillars: waste flow and analytics, landfill transformation, solutions for toxic industrial waste, as well as risk assessment and standards.

In turn, CRAES experts from the Institute of Solid Waste Pollution Control Technology, the Cleaner Production and Circular Economy Research Center, and the Innovation Center for High-value Utilization and Comprehensive Treatment of Waste showcased their respective capabilities. Their presentations covered the national technical support systems for solid waste environmental management, key breakthroughs in resource recovery, and integrated treatment technologies for both emerging contaminants and conventional industrial waste streams.

The exchange session sparked in-depth technical dialogue on several critical issues, including landfill remediation, treatment of fly ash and bottom ash from waste incineration, heavy metal pollution control, safe disposal of hazardous waste, and standards for co-processing and resource recovery of hazardous waste.

Following the meeting, the Singapore delegation toured the Laboratory of Solid Waste High-Temperature Thermal Treatment and Landfill Pollution Control.

Staff from CRAES’s International Cooperation Center, Institute of Solid Waste Pollution Control Technology, Cleaner Production and Circular Economy Research Center, and Innovation Center for High-value Utilization and Comprehensive Treatment of Waste participated in the exchange.
