Beijing, July 16, 2026 –Liu Chunyan, Vice President of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), held work talks with a delegation led by Samuel Chui Ho-kwong, Director of Environmental Protection of the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). The two sides engaged in in-depth exchanges on talent cultivation in the eco-environmental field, industry-university-research collaboration and commercialization, and the development of eco-environmental standards. Quan Zhanjun, Vice President of CRAES,attended the meeting.
Liu Chunyan extended a warm welcome to Chui and his delegation and provided an overview of CRAES’s recent development. She noted that exchanges and cooperation between the two sides have grown increasingly close in recent years. CRAES researchers have frequently visited Hong Kong to participate in conferences and exhibitions, and the Academy has signed memorandum of understanding (MOUs) with a number of institutions, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, laying a sound foundation for cooperation. Recognizing Hong Kong as a key hub for talent, she expressed the hope that both sides would strengthen cooperation in areas such as joint graduate student training and environmental protection training for Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries. By leveraging Hong Kong as a base, the two sides could work together to enhance the professionalism and international competence of the region’s environmental talent. She added that she hoped this visit would facilitate the signing of an MOU and lead to practical cooperation across broader fields and at deeper levels.
Chui shared the EPD’s experience in developing a “one-stop intelligent environmental assessment and visualization platform” and introduced its BRI sustainable green development training program. He expressed the hope of carrying out in-depth cooperation in professional talent training and the mutual recognition of professional qualifications. He also emphasized that Hong Kong stands ready to play a “bridgehead” role, helping to channel mature environmental technologies and standards from the mainland to BRI partner countries.
Prior to the talks, Chui and his delegation toured the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Eco-Environment Simulator. The head of the Institute of Environmental Information demonstrated the system’s operation, and the two sides exchanged views on empowering green development through smart technology.
This visit marked a solid step toward deepening the partnership. Both sides agreed to build on this meeting by fully leveraging the EPD’s international platform advantages and CRAES’s strengths in basic research and policy support. They will actively work towards the signing of an MOU and steadily advance practical cooperation in areas such as standards coordination, talent training, and the application of research achievements, so as to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results.
Representatives from CRAES’s Graduate School, International Cooperation Center, Environmental Standard Institute of MEE, the Environmental Technology & Engineering Company, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Eco-Environmental Science Center attended the talks.
